Terrior
Nestled high in the hills of Castellina in Chianti, Cerraia occupies a privileged position within the Chianti Classico zone. This celebrated wine region stretches across 71,800 hectares between Florence and Siena, encompassing four historic communes in their entirety – Castellina, Gaiole, Greve and Radda – along with portions of four neighboring municipalities.
At an elevation exceeding 500 meters, our vineyard claims one of the highest and coolest sites in the entire appellation. Climate records confirm Castellina as Chianti Classico’s chilliest commune, with Cerraia’s southeast-facing slope amplifying these natural advantages:
- Altitude Advantage: Natural temperature moderation for slower, balanced ripening
- Optimal exposure: Maximum sunlight interception with cooling wind ventilation
- Thermal Swing: Dramatic diurnal temperature shifts (15-20°C) preserve acidity while building complexity
This exceptional terroir combination – found only in these high elevations – allows our Sangiovese to develop its signature balance of power and elegance. The cool climate yields grapes with intense aromatics, vibrant acidity and refined tannic structure, creating wines that truly express the soul of Chianti Classico’s highest reaches.
